Technology Challenge: Space

The concept we have been investigating this term is "Past, Present, and Future" and we are currently exploring this concept through the concept of "Space". For our technology challenge this term the children were given the choice of creating a model of the solar system, a space vehicle, a satellite, or a space station. Parents were encouraged to work with their children on this project and, as usual, the finished products were of a very high standard.

Pet Day

On the afternoon of Friday 6 November we had our first pet day at Milton Primary. Many children brought along a variety of different pets with the most popular entry being in the dog section which had about thirty entries. Other pets on display included lambs, cats, rats and guinea pigs. Members of our local community were invited to undertake the difficult job of judging the entries. The children who didn’t bring along a pet were encouraged to enter a “pet creation” and materials were made available for this purpose during lunchtimes in the library throughout the week.

While judging was taking place, the student leaders organised some fun games for those children who didn’t enter a pet into the show. Each class walked around the animals on show and at the end of the day the winners were decided. Mr McLennan and Mrs McNamara were responsible for deciding who would be declared “Best in Show” which was awarded to Flynn Caldwell and his pony. It was a really fun afternoon and we all enjoyed the inaugural Milton Primary pet show!

Ancient Rome

In Room 8 we have been studying Ancient Rome and other ancient civilisations. One of the activities was a technology challenge. We were given the task of creating something made famous by the Romans. It had to be small enough to bring to school, made from materials you could find at home, and parents were encouraged to help. From the variety of choices that we brainstormed, many children chose to make a model of the colosseum, some made weapons or shields, and several children made a working catapult. We had to present our finished products to the class and give information about the thing we had made and how we went about making it. We are very proud of what was made and grateful to all the parents who helped with this project.

Covid 19 Memes

In Room 8, part of our writing programme for the last two weeks has included the creation of humorous memes related to Covid 19. The children have really enjoyed this activity which has helped remind us about some important safety messages at the same time as having a lot of fun creating these visual language messages.
